Svetlana Viktorovna Prozhogina, Chief Researcher of the Institute of Philology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Philology, graduate of the Faculty of Philology of Lomonosov Moscow State University (Romano-Germanic Department). After graduating with honors, she went to North Africa in 1961, where she studied the works of French-speaking Maghreb writers (Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians), practically opening a new scientific direction in domestic research of Arab world literatures.

In 1967, after defending her PhD thesis on "French-language literature of Morocco and Tunisia", she was enrolled in the Institute of Africa of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Cultures. Since 1968, while working abroad, she continued to research North African literary issues in general, writing a number of articles and monographs. In 1982, S. V. Prozhogina defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic "Typology of the development of French-language literatures in the Maghreb countries", being already an employee of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences/RAS, where she still works today. Having a solid theoretical base, Svetlana Viktorovna trained a large group of philologists-specialists in various literatures of African and Asian countries, who studied both the problems of forming new literary systems in post-colonial reality, and the work of their most characteristic representatives. S. V. Prozhogina's main range of research topics has significantly expanded in the last decade due to the observation of the process of cultural development of the North African diaspora in France. Continuing the Maghreb research proper, S. V. Prozhogina, actively cooperating with the Center for Berberological Research (France, Paris, House of Animal Sciences human rights), prepared an edition in Russian of "Anthologies of Berber Literature "(part 1 - "Kabyles of Algeria". 2001; part 2 - "Berbers of the Reef, Morocco". 2005) and is currently preparing for publication a volume devoted to the oral folk art of the Tuaregs of the Sahara, introducing Russian-speaking readers to samples of folklore, as well as written culture of the peoples of North Africa. But S. V. Prozhogina's main area of research interests remains the work of French - speaking Maghrebians in the XX-early XXI centuries.

Since her early publications in the journal "Peoples of Asia and Africa" (1960 - 1970), S. V. Prozhogina systematically examines French-language literature as part of the national literatures of North Africa, for the first time in literary studies, analyzes the works of such major writers as Moroccans Abdelkebin Katibi, Tahar Bendjelloun, Mohammed Hayreddin, Algerians Rashid Boujedra and Nabil Fares, etc. Albert Memmi, a Tunisian, highlights the changes, turns and trends that have emerged in the literature of the region, which were brought to life by the process of spiritual decolonization of the peoples of these countries.

Already in 1984, S. V. Prozhogina's monograph " The Turn of Epochs - the Turn of Cultures. Problems of typology of literature in French in the countries of North Africa. 40s-80s". This book is devoted to the study of the problems of French-language literature in North Africa during the period of decolonization. The work contains new materials that, for the first time in Russian literary studies, make it possible to identify the regional specifics of these literatures. The author shows the stages of the formation of national literatures in the depths of colonial society and in the era of national liberation struggle, the evolution of the literary process after the restoration of independence, reveals the meaning of referring mainly to the biographical model of the novel, examines the dependence of artistic search on the development of national identity and social transformations. Much attention is also paid to the concept of personality in the works of North Africans, their solution to the problems of the" collision "of East and West, the" meeting " of civilizations.

In the 1980s, the center for research on contemporary North African literatures was actually moved: while in the 1970s they were actively studied by the staff of both IMLI and the Institute of Oriental Studies, now the latter occupies a leading place in their study.

In 1989, within the framework of the scientific session "Interaction of cultures and literatures of the East and West", a conference "Principles of research of African literatures in the world literature system" was held, the materials of which were published in 1992. In this book, a theoretical article by S. V. Prozhogina is published, where the European-language literatures of Africa are considered as a systematic formation, the appearance of which is due to a complex of extra-literary connections and relations.

In the second half of the 1980s, the Institute of Oriental Studies published two more books by S. V. Prozhogina: in the series" Writers and Thinkers of the East", the Nauka publishing house published her monograph "Dris Shraibi" - about the largest novelist in Morocco, and in the Higher School publishing house-the textbook "Modern Literature of Algeria".

At the same time, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Institute was preparing to publish a fundamental study that gave a new impetus to the study of Maghreb literatures in Russia - the three-volume History of National Literatures of the Maghreb Countries (under the general editorship of S. V. Prozhogina), published in the series "History of Oriental Literatures" in Moscow. 1993. The volume of these three volumes is about 1000 pages.

The sections on French-language literature in these volumes are written by S. V. Prozhogina: in the books "Algeria" and "Morocco" they make up almost two-thirds of the total volume, which corresponds to the real place of French-language literature in the modern literary process of these countries. The work provides a systematic analysis of the literary development of the Maghreb countries in the new and recent periods in the context of their socio-political and cultural evolution since the transition from medieval literature based on the canon (in Algeria and Tunisia, this is the end of the XIX century, in Morocco - the beginning of the XX century), to a fundamentally different individual author's creativity, which is able to adequately reflect the dynamic modern reality.

The paper considers the development of modern North African literatures until the end of the 80s of the XX century, when Maghreb literatures represented by their most prominent representatives (first of all, this applies to French-language literature) they reach the world level, overcoming the stage of apprenticeship and independently paving new paths in contemporary art. At the same time, as shown in the study, the "breakthrough" to modern topics and means of artistic expression is carried out by literature in French, the experience of which is used by Arabic-language literature developing on the same national soil.

A comprehensive assessment of the significance of this work is a matter not only for specialists in the French-language literature of the Maghreb, but also for Arabists. But even a summary description of only the French-speaking part of it speaks of a truly encyclopedic study based on the analysis of a huge concrete material collected by S. V. Prozhogina during her multiple trips to the Maghreb countries. Some idea of the volume of work performed by S. V. Prozhogina and other authors of the publication is given by the reference apparatus of its volumes. It is noteworthy that not only in the literary studies of North African countries, but also in world science, there is no study of this scale devoted to the modern development of Maghreb literatures.

The 1980s and 1990s were marked by the appearance of a number of articles by S. V. Prozhogina concerning theoretical aspects of the study of North African literatures, among which we should mention the article "Modernism in French-language Maghreb literature as a problem of style" in the book "Theory of Style of Oriental Literatures", which contains a productive idea of the researcher that observations on the French-language prose of the Maghreb witness the dialectical process of gradual complication of the structures of works of art as a whole and the growing traces of the presence of different cultural layers, including stylistic ones. At the same time, S. V. Prozhogina prepared sections on the North African novel for IMLI's generalizing study "The History of Novel Forms in African Literatures".

Another area of research that was essentially discovered by this versatile specialist is the study of the literature of the North African diaspora in France, which combines sociological, cultural and literary aspects. S. V. Prozhogina has published a number of works on this topic. In the monograph " For the shores of the distant Fatherland..."there are literary portraits of the Maghreb's greatest writers, whose work captures common interests in the world.

page 207
their subjects are: foreign lands, exile, emigration, wandering, as well as portraits of young Maghrebins living in France, whose work falls on the 1980s-1990s. Monograph " Between the Mistral and Sirocco. Literature of the Maghreb diaspora at the end of the XX century" is a study that examines the development of literature of the Maghreb diaspora up to the formation of a special literature in it berov - descendants of immigrants from the Maghreb, Arabs and Berbers (established in France neologism bers combined these two ethnic groups). The specificity of this literature is determined by the fact that for its authors, who feel like magrines, France is their homeland, and French is their native language.

Key to the new works of S. V. Prozhogina was the idea that literature berov It is a fundamentally new phenomenon of the synthesis of Maghreb and French cultures, East and West. This kind of research in French-language literature first appears in the world of science.

S. V. Prozhogina's research is well-known not only in our country, but also abroad. This, in particular, is evidenced by the award of the Cambridge Medal for Achievements and merits in the field of science.

Svetlana Viktorovna is a participant of numerous conferences, symposia and congresses, including international ones. She is the winner of the annual contests of scientific papers of the Institute of Oriental Studies.

S. V. Prozhogin successfully combines her creative and scientific activities with her social ones, to which she devotes a considerable part of her time and energy. For many years, she has been the head of the trade union organization of the Institute, focusing her efforts on preserving the spirit of collectivism and traditions of the Institute of Oriental Studies. Thanks to her efforts and care, employees have the opportunity to make excursions, visit exhibitions and theaters.

The staff of the Institute of Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences wishes Svetlana Viktorovna health, further creative achievements, and success in the public field.
