There are special power days in the Hindu calendar. One of them is Padmini Ekadashi. It is the eleventh lunar day (ekadashi) in the bright half of the month of Ashadha (June-July). What does the word “Padmini Ekadashi” mean

“Ekadashi” translates from Sanskrit as “eleven” (eka — one, daśi — ten). This is the eleventh day after the full moon or new moon. It is believed that on this day the influence of the Moon on the human mind is at its maximum, and it is easier to renounce worldly desires.

“Padmini” means “lotus”. In a figurative sense — “pure”, “sacred”, “bestowing spiritual prosperity”. Padmini Ekadashi is that very ekadashi that is similar to a lotus growing out of the mud of the material world but remaining unsoiled.

Sacred texts (Padma Purana, Bhavishya Purana) say that observing Padmini Ekadashi brings results equal to donating a thousand cows or performing a hundred aśvamedha sacrifices (horse sacrifices). Words are bold, but for believers it is serious.

When Padmini Ekadashi occurs

The date is floating, depends on the lunar cycle. Usually it is the end of May — the beginning of June. In 2026 it is May 25. The fast is observed from sunrise on May 25 to sunrise on May 26. In some traditions, the fast begins in the evening of the previous day (May 24), when the Moon enters the corresponding sign.

Important: ekadashi is different for different latitudes. For the Northern Hemisphere, dates may shift. It is better to clarify at the local temple or on the panchanga calendar website.

Most believers choose a moderate level. Eat once a day — at noon. What can be: potatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes, coconuts, nuts, cashews, dates, milk, cottage cheese (paneer). What cannot be: rice, wheat, corn, legumes, honey, grain-based oil, leaves of some plants (for example, basil).

It is not only fasting that matters, but also prayer. On this day, they read the “Padmini Ekadashi-vrata katха” — the story of King Mandhata, who, by observing this fast, gained the kingdom. They sing kirtans, visit temples, listen to the reading of sacred texts.

In 2026, many will observe the fast online — through temple broadcasts, reading mantras at home.

History of Padmini Ekadashi

According to the Puranas, the god of death Yamaraja said: “Those who observe Padmini Ekadashi are freed from all sins, even from the murder of a brahmin”. In another story: King Mandhata, a just ruler but suffering from the lack of a son and wealth, turned to the sage Vasishtha. He advised him to observe Padmini Ekadashi. The king and the queen fasted, prayed, and gave alms. After a year, they had a son, and the treasury was filled with gold.

Also mentioned is the story of a brahmin who violated all rules but accidentally fasted (there was no food) on the day of Padmini Ekadashi. He repented of his sins and ascended to heaven. The moral: even unintentional observance brings results.

For Vaishnavas (Vaishnavites), Padmini Ekadashi is especially important. It belongs to the cycle of “Purusottama-masa” (an intercalary month that is added every 2-3 years to synchronize the lunar and solar calendars). In 2026 it is such a month, which enhances the significance.

Spiritual meaning: why exactly fasting

On a physical level: fasting gives rest to the digestive system, cleanses the body. On an energetic level: refusal of food switches the focus from the body to the spirit. A person thinks less about food, more about prayer.

In Hinduism, it is believed that on the day of ekadashi the Moon influences the mind (manas). The mind becomes restless. Fasting and prayer help calm the fluctuations of the mind, rise above material desires.

Padmini Ekadashi is called “lotus-like” because it gives the power to detach from the dirt (sins) and bloom in purity. This is a chance to reboot, leave bad habits, start a new life.

In today's world, where people eat constantly, not distinguishing day from night, even one day of abstinence is a feat. And it changes consciousness.

Padmini Ekadashi in different regions of India

In the north (Uttar Pradesh, Punjab), it is observed strictly. People do not even drink water (nirjala). Temples are open from 4 a.m. to midnight. In Mathura and Vrindavan (places associated with Krishna), large-scale kirtans are held.

In the south (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka), the fast is softer: water, fruits, milk are allowed. Special attention is paid to reading the “Vishnu-sahasranama” (thousand names of Vishnu).

In the west (Gujarat, Maharashtra), special dishes are prepared for the breaking of the fast — sabudana (tapioca porridge), shakkar-pare (sweet pancakes), coconut milk.

In Russia, Padmini Ekadashi is observed mainly by followers of Vaishnavism. In Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, there are temples where collective fasts and prayers are held. Anyone can join, even non-Indians.

What you can and cannot do in Padmini Ekadashi

What can be: waking up before sunrise (preferably at 4-5 a.m.), taking a bath (with cool water), wearing clean clothes in light tones, spending time in meditation, reading mantras (especially “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaia”), listening to spiritual songs, giving food to the poor (even in the fast).

What cannot be: eating grains and legumes (barley, rice, millet, lentils, chickpeas, beans), as well as meat, fish, eggs, garlic, onions, mushrooms, honey, drinking alcohol, smoking, sleeping during the day (it is considered that this nullifies the effect of the fast), shaving, cutting nails, having sex, getting angry, arguing, lying.

If you break the rule, you can repent, but the effect decreases. However, it is better not to start than to start and stop.

How to prepare for Padmini Ekadashi

The day before (May 24) you need to eat to your heart's content, but easily: fresh vegetables, fruits, milk. Exclude meat, garlic, onions. It is important not to overeat. On the night, forgive everyone who has offended you. Ask forgiveness from those you have offended.

In the morning of May 25, take a bath (ritual — with prayer). Then put on clean clothes. If you are at home, you can just sit on a rug and read a mantra. If you are going to the temple — it is better for men to cover their heads (there is a tradition), for women — in a sari or a long skirt, with a covered head (scarf).

Fast according to your strength. If you are sick, pregnant, breastfeeding, have chronic diseases — the fast is canceled. It is better to perform another type of austerities: do not eat sweets, do not watch TV, do not gossip.

After sunset on May 25, the fast has not yet ended. You need to wait until the sunrise on May 26. You can break the fast with grain food (for example, rice with vegetables). Do not overeat — the stomach is getting used to it.

The modern meaning of an ancient ritual

In the era of social networks and fast food, Padmini Ekadashi has acquired a new meaning. This is a detox for the body and mind. People refuse to eat and gadgets, spend the day in silence and prayer. This is like a digital Sabbath, but with an emphasis on physical abstinence.

Scientists confirm: periodic fasting improves metabolism, reduces blood sugar levels, promotes cell renewal (autophagy). But Padmini Ekadashi is not just a diet. It is an intentional restriction combined with spiritual practice.

In 2026, more and more non-religious people are joining ekadashi as a challenge: “try not to eat for 24 hours and not go crazy”. Many manage to do so and feel lightness.

The main thing is not to turn the fast into a hunger strike for weight loss. The spiritual component is more important.

Myths and reality about ekadashi

Myth: If you fast on ekadashi, God will forgive any sins. Reality: forgiveness depends on sincere repentance. Fasting is a help, but not automatic.

Myth: You can drink water without restrictions. Reality: in strict nirjala — you cannot even drink water. In moderate — you can.

Myth: Children also need to fast. Reality: it is not recommended for children under 8 years old. You can offer vegetarianism for the day.

Myth: If you can't fast, ekadashi is not meaningful. Reality: you can at least not eat meat, not swear, not lie. This is already good.

Myth: Ekadashi is only for Hindus. Reality: any person who respects the tradition can observe it. The main thing is the inner attitude.

Important: do not judge those who do not fast. Everyone is at their own stage.

And even if you just eat rice in the morning of May 26, you have already made a step. And from steps a path is formed.
