Biographical sketch

A. M. Vasiliev-Director of the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 1992).

Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (elected in 2000), Professor (since 1991).

Over five decades of scientific, literary and journalistic activity, he has published 35 books, including updated and revised editions and translations, and more than 900 articles in scientific publications, in Russian and foreign periodicals, not counting several hundred speeches on Russian and foreign TV and radio channels. He was a responsible editor of about 50 monographs and collections. His works have been translated into English,German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic, Farsi, Bulgarian, Danish, Hungarian, Latvian, Estonian, and Armenian.

In his research, A. M. Vasiliev developed a number of fundamental issues of the socio-political history of Arab countries in modern and modern times, as well as problems of international life, the role of religion in the political struggle, social shifts in the countries of the Near and Middle East, and the role of ethnopsychological factors in the social life of Arab countries.

The first in the Soviet Union/In Russia, he studied the phenomenon of "Wahhabism" based on the writings of its founder, Muhammad ibn Abdel Wahhab.

The main work of A. M. Vasiliev is "The History of Saudi Arabia", translated in a revised and expanded form into Arabic and English.

His scientific contribution was highly appreciated: he was awarded the title of "Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation" (1999) and the E. V. Tarle Prize (2003).

In addition to his scientific activities, A. M. Vasiliev carries out a great deal of scientific and organizational work:

* Editor-in-Chief of Asia and Africa Today magazine (since 1998).

* Coordinator of the international Section of the Scientific Expert Council under the Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

* Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Economic, Socio-political and Cultural Development in Africa.

* Member of the Foreign Policy Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

* President of the Association for Business Cooperation with African Countries.

* Member of the Society for Solidarity and Cooperation of the Peoples of Asia and Africa.

* Member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society.

His professional knowledge is in demand by the Russian Presidential Administration, the Russian government, both chambers of the Federal Assembly, and the Russian Foreign Ministry.
