Vinegar is perhaps the most undervalued product in the home. Its acidic smell repels many, but those who know the value of cleanliness keep not just one bottle on the shelf. Table vinegar (9%), apple cider, wine, white spirit — each is good for its own purposes. It disinfects, dissolves fat, kills mold, removes limescale, and can even replace expensive fabric softener. And all this for a fraction of the cost. In 2026, as eco-friendliness and economy become the main trends, vinegar is experiencing a renaissance. We tell you how to use it wisely and without harming the equipment.

Removing Limescale from Kettles and Coffee Machines

Limescale is the enemy of heating elements. Vinegar deals with it better than many commercial products. For the kettle: mix water and 9% vinegar in a 2:1 ratio (1:1 for heavy limescale). Pour into the kettle, bring to a boil, leave for 2-3 hours (or overnight). Then pour out, rinse thoroughly, and boil with clean water 2-3 times to remove the smell. For the coffee machine: dilute vinegar with water 1:1, run through a cycle without coffee, then 2 cycles with clean water. Important: do not use vinegar for aluminum kettles (it will turn black), only for stainless steel, glass, and ceramics.

Cleaning Washing Machines and Dishwashers

Washing machine: pour 100-200 ml of 9% vinegar into the detergent compartment. Run an empty cycle at the highest temperature (60-90°C) without laundry. Vinegar will remove limescale from the heating element, mold from the seal, and eliminate unpleasant odors. After the cycle, wipe the seal. For the dishwasher: place a glass of vinegar on the top shelf, run an empty cycle at a high temperature. A shine and cleanliness guaranteed. Do not do this more than once every 1-2 months to avoid eating away the rubber seals.

Eliminating Mold and Mildew

Black mold in the corners of the bathroom, on silicone seams, under the sink. Spray undiluted 9% vinegar from a spray bottle, leave for 30-60 minutes, then scrub with a brush. Vinegar kills mold spores (but does not whiten walls like chlorine). For severe infestations, repeat several days in a row. Work with gloves and a mask (vinegar fumes are irritating). After treatment, ventilate the room. Vinegar does not wash off stubborn stains but prevents the growth of new mold.

Removing Odors from Refrigerators, Shoes, and Trash Cans

Vinegar neutralizes unpleasant odors rather than masking them. For the refrigerator: wipe the shelves with a solution of water and vinegar (1:1). For shoes: dampen a cotton ball with vinegar (weak), wipe the inner surface, leave overnight. For the trash can: wash it with a solution of vinegar and water. Vinegar also helps eliminate the smell of cat urine (rinse the spot with 9% vinegar, then water). Do not use on painted surfaces (it may fade).

Washing Windows and Mirrors Without Streaks

Mix water and vinegar (3 parts water to 1 part vinegar) in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of liquid soap. Apply to the glass, wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. Vinegar dissolves greasy spots, soap helps in distribution, and no streaks remain. Cheaper and more eco-friendly than any commercial “misters”. For a shine, wipe with a dry newspaper (but better with microfiber, so as not to scratch).

Cleaning Plumbing and Removing Limescale

Faucets, shower heads, taps. Soak a rag in 9% vinegar, wrap around the soiled area, leave for an hour. Scrub with a brush. For the shower head: place it in a container of vinegar overnight. For heavy scale, use vinegar essence (70%), but be careful — it is aggressive. Do not apply to chrome-plated parts with damaged coating (it may cause corrosion). After cleaning, always rinse with water.

Fabric Softener and Removing Limescale from an Iron

Add 50-100 ml of vinegar to the fabric softener compartment during the wash. This will soften the water, add whiteness, eliminate sweat smell and static electricity. Vinegar leaves no smell after rinsing. For the iron: mix vinegar with water 1:1, pour into the reservoir, set the iron vertically and turn on the steam (over the sink). Limescale will come out with the steam. Then rinse with clean water.

Fighting Weeds and Ants on the Garden

Vinegar is a natural herbicide. Spray weeds in the cracks between tiles, on paths with undiluted vinegar. The acid burns the leaves. Do not use on beds with cultivated plants! For ants: pour vinegar (9%) into the anthill or places of their congregation. The acid eats away the chitinous exoskeleton. The method is inhumane but effective.

Conservation and Cooking

Vinegar is a classic preservative for pickles, marinades, sauces. But remember: vinegar essence requires dilution (1:11 to get 6% vinegar). Do not use essence for cleaning — it is too aggressive. Apple cider vinegar (4-6%) is good for dressing salads, it is softer. Do not store vinegar in plastic bottles (it will eat away over time).

Vinegar is a real lifesaver for the home. But remember about safety: work with gloves, do not inhale fumes (especially essence), do not mix with chlorine (toxic gas is released). And do not pour vinegar into damaged enamel or aluminum. By following these rules, vinegar will become your main helper.
