Who are SEO optimizers? People who make sure your site is visible in search. Those who know what "keywords," "link mass," and "behavioral factors" are. On May 31st in Russia, the unofficial Day of SEO optimizer is celebrated. The date was chosen not by chance. On this day in 1997, the first SEO company in the Runet was registered. The holiday is young but already beloved. It's time to tell the world about it, which revolves around Yandex and Google.
There are no exact data. It is likely that the initiative came from a group of SEO enthusiasts on professional forums (SearchEngines.ru, SeoPult). In the 2010s, they decided: we need our own day. They chose May 31st — the anniversary of the registration of LLC "Ashmanov and Partners." This was the first company in Russia to officially engage in search promotion.
In 2026, the Day of SEO optimizer is celebrated in all cities with a population of over a million. But of course, without a day off. SEO experts work even on their holiday — algorithm updates do not sleep.
There is no official status, but Yandex and Google sometimes publish humorous posts about SEO on this day.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a set of actions to promote a site in the search results. Ideally — on the first page, better — in the top 3. Tasks: collect a semantic core (what words people type in the search), optimize texts (so that they are liked by both people and robots), remove technical errors (broken links, slow hosting), increase link mass (other sites link to you), improve behavioral factors (so that visitors do not leave immediately).
The SEO optimizer is also a marketer, an analyst, and a bit of a psychologist. He knows how the user thinks, how Yandex's algorithm works (although not completely), and how to outsmart competitors. This is a constant race: algorithms are updated, you have to adapt.
The work is stressful. The Yandex algorithm can kill traffic in an instant. The SEO expert wakes up, looks at the traffic graphs, and either celebrates or drinks corvalol.
Traditionally — meetups. Professional conferences (such as "SEO-coffee" in Moscow, "Optimizer" in Petersburg) gather hundreds of specialists. They exchange experience, argue about link attributes and indexed pages, complain about Pavlov's and Minotaur's updates.
In a corporate format — pizza, beer, battles in CS. In remote work — a challenge: who will promote a one-day site to the top 10 for the query "buy an elephant." They joke that elephants can't be sold, but positions can be checked.
In social networks, a flash mob: post a screenshot of the funniest phrase from the client's technical specification. For example: "Make the site number one but without links and text." Or: "Optimize the page for a word that no one types."
Gifts to SEO experts on this day: the book "Yandex Algorithms for Beginners," a cup with the inscription "I survived Pavlov," a sublimation with a crying Google, a broom (to sweep away broken links).
The first: clients who think SEO is a magic button. "The site must be in the top tomorrow." It's useless to explain that it takes 3-6 months.
The second: black SEO experts who use prohibited methods (doorways, cloaking, manipulations). They spoil the reputation of the entire profession. White SEO experts spend time dealing with the consequences.
The third: constant updates. In 2025, Yandex changed the algorithm for evaluating texts, and many sites lost positions. SEO experts did not sleep for weeks, editing content. In 2026, there may be another one.
The fourth: a lack of qualified personnel. A good SEO is expensive, and courses graduate "specialists" who know only the word "keys." It is customary to remember mentors on the Day of SEO optimizer.
There are many ways. The classic: study marketing, then take courses (Netology, Skillbox, Yandex.Practicum). An alternative: start your own blog, try to promote it, get some experience, then go to work at an agency.
Knowledge is needed: HTML, CSS, basic PHP, analytics (Yandex.Metrika, Google Analytics), the ability to work with Excel (or Google Sheets) at the level of "summary tables and VLOOKUP," an understanding of buyer psychology.
Qualities: perseverance (results do not come immediately), analytical mind (putting together puzzles from data), stress resistance (the site has fallen — do not panic), the ability to communicate with the client (explain in simple words).
The average salary of an SEO optimizer in Russia in 2026 is 80-150 thousand rubles in Moscow, 50-90 in the regions. It's a lot, but nerves are not for sale.
To a colleague: "I wish the robots to love you, and visitors even more. Let conversion rates grow, and refusals fall." "Let updates bypass you, and links be only of high quality."
To a friend: "Happy holiday, cunning optimizer! Let your keys open any locks, and doorways meet only on the road." "I wish your CTR to be higher than 40%, and spam in comments to be 0."
To a manager: "Thank you for not lowering us in the search results! Let your business grow as fast as the positions of sites." You can give a box of tranquilizers with the inscription "In case of an update."
On the Day of SEO optimizer, they do not forget about the IT departments either — thank you for fixing the server at 3 am.
Without them, you can't go anywhere: Yandex.Webmaster, Google Search Console — for checking indexing, errors. KeyCollector or SlovoEB — for collecting keywords. Screaming Frog — for site audit (broken links, duplicate pages). Ahrefs, Serpstat, Megaindex — for analyzing competitors and links.
Browser plugins: RDS Bar, Xtool — show site metrics on the fly. Position trackers: Topvisor, Allpositions — track the search results.
On the Day of SEO optimizer, licenses for these tools are given away. Seriously. Or at least promo codes.
Joke: "Optimization is when you make the site perfect for 3 months, and then the algorithm comes and ruins everything. You start over." Anecdote: a client tells an SEO expert: "Write a text of 1000 characters. But the keys should be 7 times. And it should be easy to read. And competitors should not copy." SEO expert: "Why don't you give me a shovel?"
Story: one optimizer spent so long setting up robots.txt that he banned himself from indexing. His gravestone said: "Here lies the one who understood Yandex last."
Humor is the best medicine for burnout on the Day of SEO optimizer.
Say: "You are a wizard. The site is finally in the top." Pay the bills without delay — this is the best gift. Don't ask on May 31st: "Why did the positions fall?" Give a day off. Or just treat to pizza.
If you are a client and you have your own SEO expert, write him a letter: "Thank you for tolerating my whims. I wish you only positive updates." And attach a smiley without a smiley (by the terms of the article — just the word "joy").
And remember: a good SEO is expensive, a bad one — even more expensive. Appreciate those who understand.
The SEO optimizer is like a street sweeper. When the site is in the top, no one knows who did it. When the site falls, everyone blames the optimizer. The Day of SEO optimizer is the day when we say: "Thank you for being in the search." Without you, the Internet would have been a dump of useless sites. With you — a convenient shelf with products and knowledge.
On May 31st, raise a glass for SEO. For people who know how to please the robot but do not forget about the human. And let the algorithm be with you.
