The presence of Russia in Mali has become one of the key factors shaping the military-political situation in this West African country. After the withdrawal of French forces in 2022 and the rise to power of a military junta, Moscow significantly strengthened its positions, replacing the Wagner PMC with a structured African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

African Corps: Replacing Wagner

The African Corps, operating under the auspices of the Russian military department, replaced the private military company Wagner in mid-2024. This change occurred after serious losses suffered by mercenaries in battles with Tuareg rebels. Transitioning under the control of the Ministry of Defense allowed Russia to take a more systematic approach to supporting the Malian government, combining military, logistical, and, as experts note, political levers of influence.

The corps' strength in the country is estimated at approximately 1,5–2 thousand people, many of whom are former Wagner fighters.

Escalation of Conflict and Corps Tasks

In 2026, Russia's military presence in Mali took on particular significance in the face of a large-scale offensive by rebel forces. On April 25, 2026, the Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muслиmin (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) and the Front for the Liberation of Azawad (Tuareg) launched a coordinated attack on several strategic objects in the country, including the capital Bamako, with the aim of carrying out a coup d'état.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, units of the African Corps played a decisive role in repelling this attack, inflicting \"irreparable losses\" on the enemy and preventing a change of power. The losses of the fighters during these clashes, according to statements, exceeded 2500 people.

The main tasks of the Russian contingent in Mali include:

  • Supporting government forces in their fight against jihadist groups and Tuareg separatists.
  • Assisting in securing key facilities, including the Russian Embassy in Bamako.
  • Participation in logistical operations, including the delivery of fuel and food to the capital and other populated areas.
  • Training Malian military personnel, such as the preparation of paratroopers of the 33rd Regiment using Russian Mi-8AMTSH helicopters.

Challenges and Changes in Tactics

Despite the efforts, the Russian corps faced serious challenges. In May 2026, control over the key city of Kidal in the north of the country passed to rebel forces. This defeat forced the Russian command to reconsider its tactics.

Analysts note that the African Corps began to withdraw its forces from the most dangerous northern regions, focusing on protecting the capital and conducting air strikes on enemy positions. One expert noted that Russian military personnel \"try to minimize the impact on personnel and maximize the damage inflicted\" by using aviation to support Malian ground forces.

At the same time, the JNIM and Tuareg groups continue to launch attacks, including with drones, on Russian bases and columns. For example, in July 2026, a column consisting of over 200 African Corps soldiers and more than 100 Malian military personnel was ambushed in the north of the country.

Military-Technical Cooperation and Supplies

In addition to direct participation in combat operations, Russia actively supplies the Malian army with weapons and equipment. In July 2026, it was reported that a large shipment of armored vehicles was delivered to the country by a cargo ship. The cargo included armored personnel carriers, trucks, and light infantry vehicles, which were then spotted in a column arriving in Bamako. Experts believe that this equipment can help government forces launch an offensive on rebel positions.

It should be noted that military support from Russia is not the only one. Mali also receives weapons from China, including air defense systems and armored vehicles, indicating the diversification of sources of military and technical assistance.

Context and International Dimensions

The activities of the African Corps in Mali fit into a broader geopolitical picture. Russia views Mali as a key platform for strengthening its influence in the Sahel region, especially in light of the creation of the \"Union of States of the Sahel\" together with Burkina Faso and Niger. This causes concern in the United States, which, according to media reports, is trying to restore its influence in the region and regain air reconnaissance capabilities.

Official relations between the countries were formalized by an Agreement on the Basics of Relations, ratified by the Federation Council at the end of 2025, covering a wide range of sectors from military cooperation to trade and culture.

Conclusion

The Russian African Corps has become a central element of Moscow's strategy to support the military government in Mali. Despite the claimed successes in repelling attacks on the capital, the reality on the ground remains complex. The loss of control over northern territories, the shift to a defensive tactic with an emphasis on aviation, and the continued attacks by rebels show that the stabilization of the situation in Mali is far from complete. The further development of events will depend on the ability of Russian and Malian forces to adapt to the dynamic situation, as well as the international context and logistical capabilities of the parties.
