At the age of 18, he was subjected to cruel persecution by pagans. Julian was imprisoned and tried to renounce Christ, but he remained firm in his faith. Along with him, his mother was also executed. According to legend, the youth was placed in a sack with snakes and thrown into the sea. Later, his remains were found and became famous for their miraculous cures.

In Russia, the name Julian transformed into the more familiar "Ulyan", so the day of his memory received the folk name — Ulyanov Day. It is associated with the fact that by the beginning of July, the linden begins to bloom in large numbers in the middle belt of Russia. In the peasant tradition, this was an important event: linden was considered a sacred tree, a mother-tree, giving everything necessary. From this day on, they began to collect linden flowers for the preparation of medicinal decoctions.

Linden flowers have long been valued for their healing properties. They were used for colds, fevers, headaches, and coughs. Women washed their faces with linden dew or infusion of flowers to maintain youth and attractiveness. The linden was revered not only as a medicinal plant but also as a protector. There was a belief that it protected from evil eye, and anyone who cut down a linden would inevitably get lost in the forest. Also, it was believed that lightning does not strike the linden, so it was often planted near homes and churches.

It was strictly forbidden to argue with loved ones, to quarrel and argue on Ulyanov Day. However, marriages or engagements on this day were considered a good omen and, according to beliefs, promised harmony and a happy joint life.

Traditions and Taboos of the Festival

Like any folk festival, Ulyanov Day was surrounded by many traditions and taboos.

It was customary to:

• Collect linden flowers without breaking branches and dry them for winter infusions
• Wash your face with linden infusion for beauty and health
• Three times dive into the water with your head, to wash away diseases and worries
• Help the needy, give alms, but not look into the eyes of the beggar
• Drink tea from linden flowers and spend time with family

It was strictly forbidden:

• Chop down linden, break its branches, or peel its bark — this could bring misfortune
• Argue with close ones, especially with loved ones
• Start new affairs or long journeys — they could turn out to be unsuccessful
• Borrow or lend money to not scare away financial luck
• Engage in witchcraft or divination

On this day, they also carefully observed the weather. Abundant blooming of linden flowers foretold a warm and sunny summer, while a long thunderstorm — prolonged bad weather.
