July 21, 2010 marked the 75th anniversary of Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Chufrin Gennady Illarionovich.

After graduating from Leningrad State University in 1958 and then completing postgraduate studies, G. I. Chufrin devoted his entire working life to the East, both in his practical and research work. G. I. Chufrin has a priority in Russian science in studying the processes of economic integration on the Asian continent. He developed theoretical and research principles for analyzing these issues, and studied the economic mechanism of economic cooperation and integration in Asia. One of the main directions of G. I. Chufrin's research activity for many years is the study of the countries of South-East Asia. In 1989-1998. Gennady Illarionovich was a member of the editorial board of the journal "Peoples of Asia and Africa" ("East/Oriens")

G. I. Chufrin is the author and co-author of 12 monographs and more than 120 scientific articles published in Russia and abroad in Russian, English, French, Japanese and Korean. Among them are such fundamental studies as " Economic integration in Asia "(Moscow, 1975), "National Security of Russia in the East: challenges and Responses" (Moscow, 1994), "Drug Business in the South of Russia: political Aspects" (Moscow, 1997), etc.*

Over the years of his scientific and pedagogical activity, he has trained many highly qualified specialists in the field of Oriental studies. Thanks to his long-term efforts, the study of Southeast Asia has reached a new qualitative level as an independent branch of Russian Oriental studies. In recent years, his research interests have focused on the world economy and international relations.

G. I. Chufrin's research work has received international recognition. He has repeatedly made presentations abroad at scientific conferences, lectured at universities in the USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
