E. G. GIMPELSON. The Role of the Working Class in Running Soviet State (November 1917 - 1920).

Upon winning state power m October 1917 the proletariat of Russia became a ruling class. Workers' leading role in newly established Soviet state organs did not depend on their numerical strength. Specialists in various fields were employed in institutions where knowledge and experience were required. The whole administrative system, directed by the Communist Party, the vanguard of the working class, was proletarian in aim and functions. It put into practice the programme of the Party, the working class, a programme for upholding the gains of the revolution and building of socialism. The participation of an ever greater number of workers in government bodies created a "proletarian climate" that helped combat bureaucracy. The proletarian core, therefore, had to be strengthened. The article shows how the working class, by advancing from its midst leading cadres, and enlisting experts trained under the old, bourgeois system, successfully coped with the tasks of running the Soviet country.

V. A. ALEXANDROV. Russian Research in Common Law at the Turn of the Century.

The article is historiographic survey of the main trends in the Russian history of law and ethnography at the turn of the century, with emphasis on common law, which regulated the life of the Russian peasant community in all its aspects (economic, social and family relations). The author discusses different approaches by the official historians of law, the Narodnik trend in ethnography and specialists in the civil law, to the study of common law and its relation to state law. This has important historical relevance, since common-law norms, which regulated economic and social relations in the Russian village, and were used by the peasants in their struggle for economic and social rights, are one of the main sources on the history of the peasantry in the feudal period and after 1861 reform.
