On November 23-25, 2005, the Institute hosted the fourth meeting of the School of Young Africanists "Africa and the Modern World". The main task of the School is to preserve the traditions of Russian African studies, maintain continuity between well-known Russian scientists and the younger generation of African studies, and establish contacts among young colleagues. The conference was attended by young scientists, postgraduates and students from the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, ISAA at Moscow State University, MGIMO(U) Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, IMLI RAS, RUDN University, Academy of Public Administration, St. Petersburg, Saratov and Yaroslavl State Universities. The Organizing Committee was headed by I. V. Sledzevsky, Director of the Center for Civilizational and Regional Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A. D. Savateev, Scientific Secretary of the Scientific Council on African Problems, played a major role in the preparation of the School meeting.
The Forum of Young Africanists opened with an introductory speech by I. V. Sledzevsky. V. G. Shubin, Deputy Director of the Institute of African Studies, made a presentation on "African Studies today: possible research topics" and A. B. Davidson, Director of the Center for African Studies of the Institute of Universal History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, made a presentation on "Experience in studying modern problems in the history of Russian African Studies". publications.
At the section "Africa in historical space" A. B. Davydova (Moscow State Pedagogical University) presented a report "On the reasons for the appearance of the name of the god Ser Apis in the biographies of Alexander the Great". D. Step (ISAA) made a report "Penetration and features of Islam in West Africa in the VIII-XIV centuries." N. K. Belous (St. Petersburg State University) devoted his report to the analysis of Portuguese policy in East Africa in the 16th century. Voevodsky's report " Between Blacks and Whites: Communities of "colored" (bastards) in the system of colonial society in South Africa at the end of the XVIII -first half of the XIX century " was devoted to the ethnic relations of the corresponding groups in the historical context. 1900-1919 E. E. Tupitsina, a student of the History Department of Yaroslavl State University, presented the report "Kwame Nkrumah on the problems of racial discrimination". Kh. M. Turyinskaya (IEA RAS) spoke about the main stages of the research activity of the Polish ethnographer and anthropologist Jan Chekanovsky, who worked in Russia. At the end of V. R. Arsenyev (Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography - Kunstkamera) made a presentation on "The experience of an ethnographer getting used to the African environment".
At the section "International problems and ways to resolve them", the meeting opened with a report by M. L. Vishnevsky (Institute of Africa) "Africa in the system of modern international relations". Further presentations were made by: E. O. Kangin (Yar. GU) - "The African Union: the first results of its existence", EA. Yurchenko - "Conflict resolution in the Great Lakes region as a policy for achieving military and political stability on the continent", A. A. Arkhangelskaya (Institute of Africa) - " Mechanisms for implementing the foreign Policy of South Africa (1994-2004)", V. E. Kravchenko (ISAA) "Peculiarities of Ethiopia's foreign Policy in 1930-1956"., B.C. Kravchenko - "The conflict situation in Somalia". The report of M. V. Minaev (Institute of Africa) was devoted to the US energy policy towards Nigeria in the XXI century. O L. Fitu ni (Institute of Africa) described the current state of African-Chinese trade and economic relations.

The section "Economics and Finance: search for ways of development" opened with a report by Yu. V. Potemkin "Africa: economic situation and attempts to improve it". N. V. Zaitseva described the development of North African countries in the report "Mutual influence and contradictions of economic and socio-demographic processes in North African countries at the turn of the XXI century". E. A. Baklanova made a presentation "Transformation of the role of Islamic banks in African countries". M. S. Nosenkova addressed the issue of reforming the economic sector of Tanzania in the 1990s. A detailed analysis of the hydropower resources of the African continent was presented by M. V. Oleynik (Institute of Africa) in the report "Grand Inga: a unique project can become a reality".
At the section "Difficulties of political formation and ways to overcome them", a heated discussion was caused by the report of E. B. Demintseva (Institute of Africa) "Unrest in France: causes and prerequisites for the actions of young people from the Maghreb immigrant environment". She regarded them as a consequence of the socio-economic policy of the state. Aderonke Oluyomi, a graduate student from Nigeria, made a presentation on "The role of women in Africa's development". S. A. Kobzeva (ISAA) made a presentation on "The Index of failed States in the concept of conflict monitoring and early warning: an analysis of trends in African countries". A post-graduate student from Nigeria, S. Anyaoha, gave a presentation on "Nigeria: Obstacles to democracy", and S. E. Balandyuk (ISAA) - " Election campaigns in Tunisia in 1989-2004. The role of the parliamentary Opposition in the political process", M. S. Chereshnev (Institute of Africa) - "Institutionalization of lobbying in Africa: the Zambian experience".
The section "Cultural Anthropology: Traditional in the Light of modernity" opened with a presentation by D. M. Bondarenko (Institute of African Studies) "Social Anthropology of Africa today". I. A. Lapkina (MAE) made a presentation on "Witchcraft practices in postcolonial Africa". O. I. Kavykin (ISAA) made a presentation based on the work of the second field season of the Russian Academy of Sciences. an anthropological expedition to the United Republic of Tanzania organized by the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the topic "Popularity of traditional healer services in modern urban Tanzanian society". D. A. Khalturina (Institute of Africa) also made a report on the expedition materials on the topic"Indians in Tanzania". Dmitry Rybalkin described the prospects for developing the scientific and innovative potential of sub-Saharan Africa. The ideological role of the ethnographic exposition (on the example of the MAE RAS)".
The program of the fourth session of the School was completed by the section "Literature and Languages: History and Modernity". The session was opened by A. I. Koval (Institute of African Studies) "Modern Studies of African Languages". A. A. Banshchikova (Institute of African Studies) made a report "The image of Egypt in the source and artistic perception of the source:" The Tale of Two Brothers "arranged by D. G. Raeder". M. S. Nalich (ISAA) made a presentation on "The Life of the Prophet Ibn Ishaq-Ibn Hisham as a monument of medieval Arabic literature". The report of K. Nikitina (ISAA) was entitled "Andre Brink and J. M. Coetzee on protest literature in South Africa". L. A. Bulgakova (ISAA) made a report on the problems of Olivia Schreiner's works "African Farm" and "Private Peter Halket". KS. Sovetova made a report "A woman in the life and work of Uzo Egon (experience of tender research)".
E. V. Telitsyna (Yar.GU) presented "A comparative analysis of the epic of Amhara and Oromo". I. G. Tatarovskaya (Institute of Africa) made a report "The role and place of the" body code "in the formation of phraseological units in the Lingala language".
Summing up the School meetings, representatives of the organizing committee noted the high level of reports and their discussion. The tradition of holding schools for young Africanists should be continued, which will contribute to the development of domestic African studies.
