Penfield was a neurosurgeon who stimulated the brains of his patients during operations and recorded their sensations. He did this not out of idle curiosity, but to remove tumors without damaging vital areas. He mapped the sensory areas of the brain, showing how motor cortex areas are connected to fingers, face, and speech. He entered history as the person who proved the existence of \"eternal memory\" — the area that allows us to remember the past. He managed to look into the working brain and describe it clearly and accurately.
Although Friedrich studied the behavior of bees, his discovery of how they perceive the world became a breakthrough in understanding the functioning of human sensory systems. He showed that bees distinguish colors and patterns differently than we do, but their brain processes information in principles surprisingly similar to ours. His research on the \"bee dance language,\" where they convey information about the distance to food, showed that even the simplest neural networks can be complex. His work laid the foundation for ethology, the science of behavior, which showed that the brain of each species is a unique adaptation to its world.
Each of these researchers was obsessed. They did not just seek the truth; they sought the key to what makes us human. They saw the brain not just as an organ, but as a universe worthy of a whole life. Their achievements are not just points in encyclopedias; they are milestones on the path to understanding ourselves.
