Gregor MacGregor: Warrior, Adventurer, and the Most Audacious Swindler Who Sold a Fake Country He was a general in Simon Bolivar's army, a cousin-in-law of the great liberator, president of a self-proclaimed republic, and a chieftain (prince) of an imaginary state. He deceived hundreds of investors and colonists, selling them land in a country that did not exist. Gregor MacGregor was a Scottish adventurer whose American fate turned out to be one of the most incredible adventures of the 19th century. This man not only fought for the freedom of South America but also created one of the most daring financial scams in history, selling tickets to nowhere. A Scottish Officer Seeking Glory Across the Ocean Gregor MacGregor was born on December 24, 1786, in Scotland, into a noble family of the MacGregor clan. At 16, he entered the British army - his family bought him the rank of ensign. He quickly rose through the ranks, participating in the Peninsula War under Wellington's army. However, in 1810, after a dispute with a superior officer, he was forced to resign. Returning to Scotland, he tried to pass himself off as a colonel and a knight, but was exposed. In December 1811, his wife Maria, the daughter of an admiral, died, leaving him without his main source of income and connections. Left without money but with a thirst for adventure, MacGregor decided to go to South America, where the wars for independence of the Spanish colonies were raging. He sold his small Scottish estate and set sail for Venezuela in 1812. There, he introduced himself as a former British army officer and was immediately promoted to colonel in the rebel forces.
