Water for the top floor of Burj Khalifa is supplied through a complex multi-stage system that allows avoiding extreme pressure in the pipes and ensures water supply to all one hundred sixty-three floors. This is how it works: Water Source. Water in Burj Khalifa comes from Dubai's desalination plants, which convert seawater into drinking water. Multi-stage system. Water is not supplied to the top by a single powerful pump — this would be dangerous, as extreme pressure could burst the pipes. Instead, water is lifted in several stages, transferring from one technical floor to another. Technical floors with reservoirs. Throughout the height of the building, there are seven special technical floors equipped with water storage reservoirs and booster pumps that increase pressure. Technical floors are located, for example, at levels seventeen-eighteen, forty-forty two, seventy-three-seventy five, and one hundred fifty-five-one hundred sixty-three. Pump Operation. Pumps lift water to one technical floor. Then the next pump transfers it even higher, to the next technical floor. In this way, water \"is passed from hand to hand\". Use of Gravity. When water reaches the upper reservoirs, it can be distributed to the floors below by gravity, reducing the load on the pumps. Burj Khalifa consumes about one million liters of water per day.
