Simeon and John: Two Paths to One Silence July twenty-first. In the Orthodox calendar, the day of remembrance of two holy ascetics, whose names are rarely mentioned together, but whose destinies are surprisingly intertwined. Saint Simeon, the Fool for Christ, and Saint John, the ascetic, lived in different eras, but united by one goal — the salvation of the soul through overcoming oneself. One is a daring eccentric who shocked those around him, the other is a gentle monk seeking silence. What can we learn from these saints today, in a world where everything is measured by utility and effectiveness? Their life is a challenge, and this challenge still resounds. Saint Simeon: Madness That Was Wisdom Simeon lived in the 6th century in the Syrian city of Edessa. He was one of those called \"Fools for Christ.\" They were not mad in the medical sense. They voluntarily renounced norms and customs to break human pride and show that what the world often calls madness is actually the only path to God. Simeon walked barefoot through the streets, wore strange clothes, spoke in riddles, endured mockery and beatings. But behind this external madness was the deepest holiness. He chose this path because he understood that the usual monastic asceticism, no matter how strict, often turns into a habit. Foolishness does not allow one to relax for a moment. It forces one to always be in a state of humility because one is always subjected to scorn. This is the highest form of freedom from the opinion of others. Simeon learned to see himself through the eyes of God, not the crowd. And it is this ability that makes him so close to our time, when we are all obsessed with our image and status. Saint John: Silence That Spoke Louder Than Words John lived later — in the 8th century, but also in the East. His life was the complete opposite of Simeon.
