Ball and goal: a happy story
Football Ball: From Pig Bladder to Space TechnologyHe is the main hero of any match. For him, people run, kick, catch, and send it into the net. Without him, football loses its meaning, turning into chaos of meaningless movements. The football ball has traveled a distance of several thousand years: from roughly stitched leather bags to high-tech spheres crammed with electronics and governed by the laws of aerodynamics that only supercomputers know. Its history is the history of human ingenuity, perseverance, and passion for the game. And it is far from over.Past: From Inflated Intestines to Leather StandardImagine a medieval English village. On the square, a crowd. In the center, a leather ball stuffed with… horsehair, rags, or, worse, sawdust. Heavy, unpredictable, it flies where it's not supposed to and hits the legs hard. This is the ancestor of the modern football ball. There were also balls made of inflated pig bladders — light but extremely fragile, they would burst with every strong hit, and the game turned into searching for a new \"part\".The first official mention of a standardized ball dates back to the 1830s, when the English Football Association decided to organize chaos. The ball had to be round, leather, and not weigh more than 15 ounces. However, the leather shell absorbed moisture like a sponge, and in rainy weather, the ball became twice as heavy, turning into an instrument of torture. The real revolution occurred in 1855 when Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanized rubber, created the first rubber ball. This was a breakthrough! The rubber bladder held air, did not fear water, and was elastic. However, the ball remained shapeless — its shell made of rectangular leather pieces did not fit well on the round base. And only in the 1930s, the classic leather ball with 18 panels, stitched by hand, appeared. This design, reminiscent of a ball of wool, lasted almost half a century.Present: Science in Service of the GameToday's football ball is an engin ... Read more
