Despite the horror stories about the dangers of smoking, teenagers still pick up cigarettes. Vapes, IQOS, and e-cigarettes have only complicated the situation. Why do children start smoking in 2026? It's almost always a combination of factors.
By the age of 12-14, belonging to a group becomes more important than health. If everyone in the group smokes and you don't, you become the "odd one out." A teenager smokes to avoid being teased. Also, smoking is seen as a sign of coolness: "I'm grown-up, I can afford nicotine."
Smoking parents, older brothers, bloggers who smoke on camera (even vape), all these are role models. If the father smokes and doesn't drop dead, the child doesn't experience cognitive dissonance.
Teens experience immense stress: exams, first love, bullying. Smoking gives the illusion of relaxation (nicotine actually stimulates the nervous system, but the ritual of the drag works as a placebo). "A smoke break" becomes a legal way to step out of class and catch your breath.
In 2026, teenagers start not with cigarettes, but with POD systems (single-use vapes) with sweet flavors. They seem harmless. Then it turns out that it's sad without nicotine.
How to fight it? Banning is useless. You need to set a personal example (don't smoke yourself), talk without moralizing, and provide legal ways to relieve stress (sports, hobbies).
